Traditional Story

Region: Arctic

As a young man, Kublualuk learns he can change himself into a raven. One day, he is flying high above the land when he sees an old man who turns out to be his father. He learns that his parents have died, and that he will become a shaman like his father was. Kublualuk also meets a beautiful woman who will marry him, but only if she can have his powers. Kublualuk remembers his promise to his father: that he would always use his powers to look after the people and the animals. He refuses the woman and sends her to the ocean where she becomes Sedna, the one who watches over the creatures of the sea.
