Toward the end of King Henry VIII's reign, a pauper boy, Tom Canty, takes refuge in the palace grounds. Discovering Tom is his double, Prince Edward persuades the lad to switch places with him so he can explore the world outside. Merriment and misadventure ensue when the boys become trapped in their unaccustomed roles. The King's ambitious adviser learns Tom is an imposter and uses the boy for his own self-serving ends. Meanwhile Edward is falsely accused of theft and thrown in jail with no ally but a down-and-out young nobleman. Alan Bates and Aidan Quinn co-star in this Hallmark adaptation of Mark Twain's classic tale.
