Parvana has lived with her mother, father, brother and baby brother for a year and a half in the third floor of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan. When Parvana's father is taken to prison for reading books unrelated to the Qu'ran the family is put into a terrible position. Who will be able to earn a living where girls are forbidden to go outside alone, even for water ? Who will be the breadwinner where even professional women cannot use their skills and gifts except through the underground or through the help of other women in a network?
