Traditional Story
Region: Plains
Teaching: Respect
In this retelling of a traditional story, Napi the trickster is taking a nap when loud cries from the prairie chickens wake him up. It turns out that Buffalo and Fox were jumping on the chickens’ nests. Napi hit Buffalo on the back, causing a bump to grow. When Napi saw Fox hiding in a hole, he decreed the hole would be Fox’s home. Because these two animals did not show respect, they were punished. The lesson they learn serves as a warning to treat others as you would like to be treated.
