Harriet Tubman, born a slave, escaped north to freedom by using the Underground Railroad, a system of safe houses that led through the American south. Once free, she went back and rescued many other slaves, and also worked as a nurse and spy during the American Civil War. A brave and courageous woman, she was admired by many and, because she led so many slaves to freedom, was called "Moses" by her people.
